Claris Lifesciences wins accolades at COP 15 Summit for Changing Lives

As world leaders converge in Copenhagen for the COP 15 Summit, to debate solutions to Climate Change, Claris Lifesciences is one Indian company that is showing the way forward with its Biomass based Co-Generation facility (CDM Project No. 1852), located on the company’s lush green 80 acre campus on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

The story highlighting the company’s pioneering efforts showcased in the form of a video titled “Circle of Light,” won 2nd position at the international video contest organized by the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC), under the theme “Changing Lives.”

The winning entries were unveiled during the CDM Executive Board Meeting on the 2nd day of the COP 15 Summit, in the presence of high-level dignitaries from over 190 countries, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, Diplomats, and world media.

“Circle of Light”

The video centers on the festival of Diwali in the villages of Gujarat, where children go from home to home, collecting oil to light lamps. These lamps are then placed in a circle within the village square. The entire village gathers around this “circle of light” and celebrates the victory of light over darkness.

These lamps are traditionally lit with castor oil. Gujarat is the largest producer of castor in India, contributing about 70% to the country's castor production. The Claris CDM project pioneered the use of castor de-oiled cake, the residue from castor, as an energy generation source in this part of the world. The project meets about 30% of the campus’ energy generation needs through biomass-based energy, with the capacity to reduce 68,000 tCO2/annum of carbon emissions.
Taking a lead from this initiative, the group has recently forayed into the domain of sustainable energy generation through Abellon CleanEnergy.
Prior to this breakthrough innovation castor residue was being used either as manure, or was being disposed off. Through this process, the company has successfully established a new model for revenue generation and sustainable development, for the rural community of Gujarat - An innovation that illuminates the circle of light with the promise of a brighter, better future.
