Description
Indications
Cefotaxime sodium for injection USP is a "third generation", semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic intended for intravenous or intra-muscular administration. It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram +ve and Gram-ve aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

  • The peak plasma concentration of
    cefotaxime following 1gm
    IV bolus: 81-102 mcg/ ml 250 mg
    IM injection: 22 mcg/ ml
  • Serum protein binding : 32-50%
  • No accumulation following repetitive IV infusion
  • Active metabolite, desacetyl- cefotaxime
  • 60% excreted in the urine as unchanged drug & 24% as desacetyl-cefotaxime
  • Elimination half-life I.V. Administration:
    Cefotaxime: 0.9 - 1.14 hours
    Desacetyl metabolite: 1.3 hours
